1666: Amsterdam Coffers Guide

Ability choices, build strategy, and the roguelite risk of the Esbat.

Last updated:

Coffers are the progression and build-defining mechanic of 1666: Amsterdam. Scattered throughout Amsterdam by the Zaindaris coven, each Coffer presents three ability choices represented as jewelry on Noa’s witch form. Your choices shape what she can do in combat, investigation, and traversal for the duration of the current Esbat. This guide covers how Coffers work, how to choose wisely, and how to manage the roguelite risk they introduce.

How Coffers Appear

Coffers appear throughout each district in both day and night phases. During the day, they are found inside buildings you investigate — rewards for thorough exploration. During the Esbat, they appear in the environment as you move through the district toward your marked targets. Each district has a fixed number of Coffers — you cannot farm them or find extras.

Opening a Coffer pauses the game and presents three ability options. You must choose one immediately — there is no comparison view or confirmation screen. The choice is permanent for the current Esbat.

Ability Categories

All Coffer abilities fall into three broad categories. Combat abilities are Nux-powered offensive and defensive spells. They directly affect how you fight The Originals. Investigation abilities are Lux-powered perception and discovery tools. They make it easier to find clues, track targets, and navigate restricted areas. Familiar abilities affect Aaron’s capabilities — extended range, new interaction options, or enhanced scouting functions.

No build is purely one category. The most effective Coffer builds are hybrid — at least one strong combat ability, at least one investigation ability, and at least one Familiar upgrade. Pure combat builds struggle with environmental puzzles. Pure investigation builds lack the Nux sustain to survive the Esbat.

The Roguelite Risk

Coffers are genuinely exciting because of what they represent: permanent power in exchange for risk. If you complete an Esbat, you keep all your Coffer choices permanently. If you die, the night resets and you lose them all.

This creates a deliberate tension. Do you push deeper into a dangerous district to grab a Coffer that would dramatically improve your build? Or do you play conservatively, secure the hunt, and keep a suboptimal but reliable loadout? Both approaches are valid at different stages of learning a district.

The standard advice is: be conservative on your first attempt at any district. Learn the Esbat layout, observe the Originals’ patterns, and complete the hunt with whatever Coffers you naturally found. On subsequent attempts, optimize your Coffer choices around what you now know about the challenge ahead.

Synergy and Build Thinking

Abilities synergize with each other. Petrification spells that hold an enemy in place create an opening for a heavy Nux damage spell. Investigation abilities that reveal hidden paths make it easier to reach Coffers in risky locations. Familiar upgrades that extend Aaron’s scouting range mean you enter every fight with better intelligence.

Think about your current Esbat’s specific challenges before choosing. If you are facing an Original with strong area-denial attacks, prioritize defensive Nux shields. If you are in a district with many restricted buildings, prioritize investigation Lux. The Esbat Checklist in the Tools section provides a framework for thinking about this before each hunt.

What Happens to Coffers After the District

Coffers collected during a district’s Esbat are permanent once that Esbat is complete. You can revisit the district after clearing it, but no new Coffers appear. Your permanent ability loadout grows as you progress through the campaign — this is the primary long-term progression system.

This means district order matters for build development. If you are struggling with a later district because your build is poorly optimized for its challenges, you cannot go back and farm better Coffer choices in earlier districts. Plan your Coffer priorities around the challenges you expect to face.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.

Can I see what abilities an Original drops before choosing my Coffer?

No. The three options are revealed only when you open the Coffer. You must commit to a choice without knowing the alternatives.

Do Coffers from different Esbats stack?

Yes. Each successful Esbat adds to your permanent loadout. You are not limited to one set of active abilities — you accumulate options across the campaign.

Can I choose no ability and leave the Coffer?

You must choose one of the three presented options. There is no 'skip' or 'leave' choice. If you die before using the ability, the Coffer's choices are lost along with the rest of the night.

Are there duplicate abilities across different Coffers?

Yes. Some abilities appear in multiple Coffers across different districts. This means you can acquire the same ability twice, which is functionally useless — the duplicate does not improve or stack with the original.
