1666: Amsterdam Identity Quests: Seal, Name, Nominem

You do not kill a rumour. You reconstruct a contract, then speak it back under the moon.

Last updated:

The hunt is not “find the glowing NPC and press attack.” Designers at Panache, including Sarah Petri in the August 2026 Midnight Chronicle interview, described the identity quest as a deliberate refusal of a simple face-in-the-crowd check. An Original lives in public. The work is to pierce the identity they present, gather enough proof to force an unmasking, and only then spend the Esbat fighting the thing that signed the pact.

The three proofs

Preview coverage from Game Informer, PC Gamer, and TheSixthAxis after the 10 August embargo agrees on the same shopping list. For each target you are expected to establish:

Appearance — how they move through Amsterdam as a citizen: house, trade, habits, the neighbours who cover for them. Witch sight helps, but documents and conversation confirm what a glow only suggests.

The seal — a concrete object. It embodies the pact the Original signed. It is not flavour loot. Without the seal, the identity quest has no physical spine; you are still arguing with a costume.

The true name — the name used as the trigger. Nominem is not a generic damage spell. It is the spoken key that uses that name to force transformation, literal and figurative, when the moon is high.

Skip one of the three and the night fight plays like a boss you never unlocked. That is usually a research failure, not a combat-skill failure.

How you actually gather them

Search every floor. Ledgers, gablestones, chapel notes, and servant rooms exist because Originals launder centuries through paperwork. Talk to citizens who sound slightly too rehearsed. Send Aaron under doors when a study is locked from the hall. The investigation guide is the movement layer; this page is the win condition for that movement.

The Heeparan is the Zaindaris tool used to read protected information during these searches. If a text looks sealed or ceremonial, you are probably looking at pact material, not a random collectible. Do not vendor-think it.

Nominem at the Esbat

When the full moon arrives and your proofs are in order, Noa casts Nominem at the height of her power. The Original is forced out of the human face and into the combat form the night is built for. If you trigger the Esbat with a half-finished identity file, you are fighting a script with missing pages. Mark the target in the investigation menu only when you can explain, in your own words, who they are, what they signed, and which name opens them.

After the kill, reclaimed Nux is sealed into the Nuxefer. That book is both a gameplay sink for stolen power and the in-world document Clio translates in the present-day thread. Collecting is not a score tally. It is how the coven keeps the ledger.

Why this exists

If identity were only a waypoint marker, Amsterdam would collapse into a linear kill list. The seal-and-name structure makes every district a small detective story whose last chapter is a supernatural duel. It also explains the day/night powerless gap: you cannot Nominem your way through Tuesday. You can only Nominem what you have already proven.

Common mistakes

Marking the first glowing merchant and running to night. Ignoring the seal because it looks like a quest trinket. Treating Nominem as an ultimate you press when health is low. Entering the Esbat with high Suspicion so witch hunters interrupt the unmasking. All four are how first districts feel “broken.” They are not. The contract is unfinished.

Pair this page with How to Hunt The Originals for routing, and with Coffers only after the name is known. Jewellery does not replace a missing true name.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.

What is Nominem?

The Collector’s unmasking working. It uses the Original’s true signed name at Esbat to force them out of human guise into the form you can actually collect.

What is the seal for?

It is the physical token of the pact. The identity quest is built so that a name without a contract object is not enough. Find the seal while you still have daylight.

Can Aaron finish an identity quest alone?

He can steal routes and peek rooms Noa cannot enter cleanly, but the Collector still has to assemble appearance, seal, and name. Aaron is a burglar and scout, not a substitute witch.

I marked someone and the night still felt wrong.

Marking tracks a suspect. Nominem needs the proofs. Go back through the building and the neighbourhood until you can point to seal and true name, then attempt the Esbat again.
