1666: Amsterdam Zaindaris: the Coven Behind the Hunt

They gave the gift. They also trained the woman who has to take it back.

Last updated:

The first official gameplay feature, again voiced by Jean-François Boivin, is not a combat trailer. It is a creation myth with a job description attached. In the deep past, tribes gathered in a sacred place. One of them — the Zaindaris — was entrusted with an ancient magic and told to pass it only to those worthy to bear it. Those who received the energy became known as the Originals. The gift corrupted. The people who bestowed it had to learn how to take it back. A cycle began: a woman of the Zaindaris is chosen to restore balance, hunt those who still carry the power, reclaim it, and preserve the world no matter the cost. That woman, in 1666, is Noa Brooklyn. She is about to become the Collector.

Originals are not random demons

They are the downstream of a covenant that went wrong. Centuries of accumulated Nux made them immortal, politically useful, and predatory. They live behind human faces in a city that already runs on ledgers, ships, and respectable cruelty. The game’s Amsterdam is a Golden Age port; the coven’s work is to interrupt a supernatural version of the same extraction. For individual profiles, see The Originals. For how Noa actually unmasks them, see identity quests.

What a Collector is

A Collector is not a superhero title. It is a coven office. Noa is an apprentice apothecary in public and a Zaindaris instrument in secret. Her commencement in December 1665 is the ritual that puts the office on her shoulders. She fights with broom, Lux, Nux, and inherited tools: the sacred branch, the Heeparan for protected texts, and the Nuxefer that records what she reclaims. The witchcraft page is the mechanical half of that office. This page is the reason the office exists.

The 333-year pulse is the coven’s calendar and the Originals’ vulnerability window. Miss the alignment and the work waits for the next Collector. That is why Early Access’s Esbat nights feel like appointments, not open-world events you can postpone forever.

The Union

Noa does not walk alone. Boivin is explicit: a choice must be made, someone will stand beside her, and together they form the Union. In the released story that companion is Aaron — a 1999 consciousness forced into a cat’s body — with Clio, his daughter, reading the Nuxefer in the present. The Prologue makes you feel the choice; Early Access makes you live with Aaron’s paws and commentary. Switching bodies is not a gimmick. It is how the coven’s current Collector stays mobile in a city that watches witches.

Moral weather

The studio does not sell the Zaindaris as spotless. Collectible fragments hint at earlier Collectors who kept power or bargained with specific Originals. Noa’s own arc is the tension between duty and self. Read story and lore for the historical texture of 1666 Amsterdam and characters for Noa, Aaron, and Clio as people rather than functions.

How this should change your play

When a document mentions the coven, read it. When a Coffer appears, remember it is jewellery the Zaindaris left in the streets for the Collector, not a random roguelike altar. When Nominem lands, you are performing the taking-back that the myth describes. The day and night cycle is the liturgy. The Esbat is the mass. Everything else is parish administration: Suspicion, potions, maps.

If you only want tactics, you can skip this page. If a boss feels thematically empty, you probably skipped it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.

Is the coven called Zaindaris or Zandaris?

Official materials use Zaindaris for the coven Noa belongs to. Some trailer subtitles slur the vowels. This wiki follows the in-game and Steam spelling Zaindaris.

Are Originals former Zaindaris?

The myth says the Zaindaris passed a gift to those deemed worthy, and those bearers became Originals who then corrupted. Treat them as the failed recipients of the same current Noa is trained to reclaim, not as a separate monster species with no history.

What is the Union?

The bond between the Collector and the chosen companion. In the campaign that is Noa and Aaron working as one: witchcraft and four paws, two centuries, one hunt.

Do I need this lore to finish Early Access?

You can finish a district on tactics alone. You will misread identity clues and Coffers if you treat the coven as flavour text. The story is the justification for every system.
