1666: Amsterdam How to Manage Suspicion
Stay hidden, stay safe, and keep the witch hunters off your trail.
The Suspicion meter is one of the most distinctive mechanics in 1666: Amsterdam, and one of the most punishing to ignore. Witch hunters patrol the streets of Amsterdam, and they are specifically alert to witchcraft and supernatural activity. Every action Noa takes that could be interpreted as witch behavior gradually fills the meter. If it fills completely, hunters converge on her position and the hunt becomes dramatically harder. Learning to manage Suspicion is not optional — it is a core survival skill.
What Raises Suspicion
The meter increases when Noa performs any action that could be witnessed and interpreted as witchcraft by a bystander or hunter. Using offensive Nux spells in public is the fastest way to raise it. Even defensive spells cast in populated areas will draw attention. Walking too close to known witch hunter patrol routes also increases the meter, even if you are doing nothing overtly suspicious.
Certain investigation actions also contribute. Searching a property aggressively — breaking locks rather than picking them, or making noise in a quiet building — sends ripples through the neighborhood. The game does not always make it obvious when an action contributed to your Suspicion, which is part of the tension.
What Does Not Raise Suspicion
Speaking to NPCs as an ordinary citizen does not raise the meter. Normal walking and exploration in public spaces is safe. Using Lux environmental abilities in private spaces — inside buildings you own or have legally entered — does not contribute. Aaron in cat form does not trigger Suspicion for Noa at all.
The key principle is visibility and witness. Actions that are hidden from public view or performed in a way that could be explained naturally do not register. The moment you are seen doing something unambiguously supernatural, the meter climbs.
How to Reduce Suspicion
The most reliable method is returning to the safehouse. Time spent at the safehouse automatically reduces the meter. There is no cost and no limit — it is the default recovery method.
Potions crafted at the safehouse can reduce Suspicion more quickly. These potions are made from ingredients gathered throughout Amsterdam and crafted at the safehouse’s alchemy station. Always keep at least one Suspicion-reducing potion in stock before heading into a new district.
Waiting in hiding spots — under bridges, in alcoves, behind haystacks — will slowly reduce the meter. This is useful when you are far from the safehouse and need to get somewhere without being seen. The reduction is gradual, not instant.
Witch Hunter Behavior at High Suspicion
At moderate Suspicion levels, hunters become more alert. Their patrol routes expand and they stop more frequently to scan the area. At full Suspicion, they converge. The convergence event is dramatic — multiple hunters close in on your last known position and begin a systematic search. Escaping a convergence is possible but difficult, and it will cost you significant time.
During convergence events, Aaron becomes essential. Switching to cat form lets you slip through the search perimeter while the hunters focus on Noa’s last position. This is not a guaranteed escape, but it is the best tool available.
District-Specific Patterns
Early districts have lighter hunter presence and the Suspicion system feels more forgiving. Later districts — particularly those in more religiously strict areas of Amsterdam — have substantially heavier patrols and a lower tolerance for supernatural activity. Approaching the same way in every district is a common beginner mistake.
The best practice is to treat every district as a new threat assessment: observe patrol patterns with Aaron before committing Noa, identify safe routes and hiding spots, and plan your investigation to minimize public witchcraft usage. See the Amsterdam Map for an overview of district layouts and relative hunter density.
Suspicion and the Esbat
During the Esbat, Suspicion functions differently. The supernatural atmosphere of the full moon essentially overrides the normal social order — witch hunters are out in force but the Esbat takes place in a different layer of reality. The meter does not carry over between day and night phases, which means a clean day with low Suspicion gives you a clean slate at night.
However, starting an Esbat with elevated Suspicion is dangerous. The transition between phases is not instant, and hunters near your position when dawn approaches can create complications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.
Does hiding in a building reduce Suspicion?
Hiding indoors does not reduce the meter on its own. You need to be in a designated hiding spot — alcoves, haystacks, covered bridges — or at the safehouse. Simply being indoors is not enough.
Can other NPCs help me reduce Suspicion?
No. Only the safehouse, potions, and hiding spots reduce Suspicion. NPCs cannot be bribed or convinced to ignore suspicious behavior.
Does casting a spell in my own home raise Suspicion?
If no one witnesses it, no. The Suspicion system is entirely about being observed. Private spaces — buildings you have legally entered and are alone in — are safe for witchcraft.
What is the fastest way to reduce Suspicion mid-district?
A Suspicion-reducing potion is the fastest option. If you do not have one, find the nearest hiding spot and wait, or fast-travel to the safehouse. Fast travel is always available from the safehouse menu.
