1666: Amsterdam Witchcraft and Magic Guide

Master Lux, Nux, and the supernatural tools of the Zaindaris coven.

Last updated:

Witchcraft is the defining mechanical identity of 1666: Amsterdam. Noa is a Collector — a witch trained by the Zaindaris coven to hunt and absorb the power of The Originals. Her magical abilities are split into two categories: Lux and Nux. Understanding this split and how to invest in each is one of the first strategic decisions every player makes.

Lux: Environmental Abilities

Lux abilities are tied to the supernatural layer of the world. They let Noa interact with the hidden magical infrastructure of Amsterdam — lighting candles that reveal hidden messages, manipulating shadows to create paths, communicating with residual spirits, and interacting with the objects and locations that the Zaindaris have marked over centuries.

Lux abilities are relatively abundant and do not deplete in the same way Nux does. Most Lux abilities are toggle or persistent effects rather than limited casts. You can use Lux freely in private spaces without concern for resource management. In public, Lux usage still raises Suspicion if witnessed, even though it does not consume a resource.

The primary use of Lux is investigation. Many locked doors, hidden passages, and environmental puzzles require Lux abilities to solve. Lux is also how Noa interacts with the supernatural traces left by The Originals during their centuries in Amsterdam — these traces are invisible to normal perception but glow under Lux.

Nux: Combat Magic

Nux is the combat branch of Noa’s witchcraft. It fuels offensive spells, defensive shields, and the most powerful direct abilities in her arsenal. Unlike Lux, Nux is a limited resource that must be managed carefully during the Esbat.

Nux depletes when you use combat abilities. It is restored primarily through successful quick time events during combat. These QTE moments are not optional — ignoring them means losing access to your strongest abilities mid-fight. The rhythm of Nux expenditure and QTE restoration is the core combat loop.

Nux has two pools: a combat pool used for offensive and defensive abilities, and a smaller reserve that can be converted from Lux. The conversion is automatic and situational — the game converts Lux to Nux when you are low on combat resources in a non-combat context, such as preparing for an Esbat.

Spell Categories

Noa’s spells fall into three broad categories that overlap both Lux and Nux. First, there are environmental spells that manipulate the physical world: levitation, petrification, and telekinetic interaction with objects. Second, there are combat spells: direct damage, area denial, and shield generation. Third, there are perception spells: witch sight, truth detection, and the ability to read supernatural residue.

The Zaindaris coven has trained Noa to use all three categories, but the Coffer system lets you specialize. Each Coffer offers three choices from a specific branch — you can lean into combat, invest in environmental manipulation, or build for perception and investigation. There is no objectively correct build, but the game’s combat difficulty is tuned around players who invest at least partially in combat Nux abilities.

Coffer Ability Choices

Coffers are scattered throughout Amsterdam by the Zaindaris coven. When you open one, you are presented with three ability options, each represented as jewelry on Noa’s witch form. These choices are not reversible — once chosen for an Esbat, they are locked until the hunt ends or you die.

The strategic depth comes from the synergy system. Some abilities combine powerfully with others — a petrification spell that holds an enemy in place pairs well with a high-damage follow-up Nux spell. Other combinations are less effective. Experienced players think about their Coffer picks in advance, considering what they expect from the upcoming Esbat.

The roguelite element means that dying with a powerful ability set is genuinely costly. Building conservatively — picking abilities that are reliably good rather than situationally spectacular — is often the smarter play on your first attempt at a district. Once you understand the Esbat layout, you can optimize more aggressively on subsequent attempts.

Building for Investigation vs. Combat

The game’s design accommodates both playstyles, but the Esbat always requires combat ability. A pure-investigation build focused on Lux and perception will struggle in the Esbat unless you are extremely skilled at the QTE system. The recommended approach is a hybrid: strong enough in combat to handle the Esbat, flexible enough in Lux to solve environmental puzzles without wasting Nux resources.

The Esbat Checklist in the Tools section provides a planning framework for optimizing your ability choices before each hunt.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.

Can I reset my Coffer ability choices?

Coffer choices are locked per Esbat. If you die, the night resets and you lose those choices. You cannot respec mid-Esbat. Between Esbats, there is no respec system — choices accumulate across the campaign.

Is there a best build for beginners?

A balanced Lux/Nux hybrid is the most forgiving for new players. Prioritize one strong Nux combat ability and one reliable Lux investigation ability. Avoid over-investing in situational abilities you do not understand yet.

Does Nux regenerate outside of QTEs?

Only in very limited circumstances — the game is designed to make QTEs the primary restoration method. Some rare items can restore small amounts of Nux, but they are not reliable enough to build a strategy around.

Can I use witchcraft during the day without consequences?

Yes, in private spaces. Using witchcraft in front of witnesses raises Suspicion. Using it in a building you have legally entered and are alone in does not. The key distinction is whether you are observed.
