1666: Amsterdam Early Access Updates
Every official patch note and Midnight Chronicle from Panache Digital Games since launch.
This page tracks all officially published updates for 1666: Amsterdam Early Access since the August 25, 2026 launch. Check back after every major game update for the full patch notes. The Midnight Chronicle is Panache Digital Games’ regular development update series, published on a roughly bi-weekly cycle aligned with the lunar calendar.
Launch — August 25, 2026
The initial Early Access release introduced the first chapter of the campaign: approximately 15 hours of content covering the opening district of Amsterdam. The full Prologue content is included. Full controller support with DualSense haptics. Hardware ray tracing with Unreal Engine 5. The game supports English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), and Russian.
Content included: First district with four Originals. Tutorialized investigation and Esbat systems. Safehouse with potion crafting. Aaron familiar companion with full cat-form traversal. Dual-protagonist switching outside of combat and cutscenes.
Known issues at launch: Occasional crash on loading into the Esbat for the third Original in sequence. Suspicion meter occasionally fails to update visually when leaving a safehouse. Some cat-only routes can be exited incorrectly, dropping Aaron outside the playable area — fast travel from safehouse corrects this.
THE MIDNIGHT CHRONICLE — Issue #05 (August 12, 2026)
Published to mark the 25 August Early Access date. The studio released Gameplay Feature #3, the last of the pre-launch system videos, narrated by co-founder and executive producer Jean-François Boivin.
The Day and Night Core Mechanic — Boivin walks investigation by daylight, militia risk when using magic in public, Aaron’s feline routes, and Esbat combat once Originals drop the mask. The video is the canonical explanation of why homework beats raw broom skill. A French-language cut was posted alongside the English feature.
Behind the Shadows: Sarah Petri — Game designer Sarah Petri described the identity quest: it cannot rest on a face in the crowd. Players need a concrete object — the seal of the pact — and the true name that triggers transformation through Nominem. See this wiki’s identity quest and day and night pages for the play-facing version of that interview.
THE MIDNIGHT CHRONICLE — Issue #04 (July 29, 2026)
The full moon edition focused on Noa and Aaron as the second official Gameplay Feature video. Co-founder and Executive Producer Jean-François Boivin introduced both central characters in a dedicated video feature.
Gameplay Feature: Two Characters, Two Centuries, One Mission — The second gameplay feature video showcases Noa and Aaron, their contrasting playstyles, and how their dual-perspective structure drives the experience.
Voice Actor Interviews — Victoria Diamond (Noa) described playing a witch as “really cool” and noted the Mid-Atlantic accent as the most challenging aspect of the role. She described Noa in three words: relentless, powerful, stoic. Xiao Yi Hernan (Aaron) highlighted the contrast between Aaron’s comedic moments and his underlying depth. He described Aaron as passionate, educated, and curious.
Edge Magazine Cover — Noa and Aaron landed on the cover of Edge Magazine issue 426, with unique variations for retail and subscriber editions. The issue features interviews with the team about the game’s long development history.
Press Preview Event — Four members of the Panache team travelled to Amsterdam for a press preview event with influencers and press, giving a first look at the game after the Prologue intro.
Studio Update — The team has been debugging for weeks and the narrative team returned to the recording booth for additional voice work.
What’s Next — The next update will feature Gameplay Feature 3, covering the day and night cycle mechanic.
THE MIDNIGHT CHRONICLE — Issue #03 (July 14, 2026)
This edition explored the art and animation of 1666: Amsterdam, particularly how three centuries coexist in a single visual style.
Devlog: Painting Three Eras — Filmed at the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Montréal, this episode explored how the team drew inspiration from 17th-century Dutch Golden Age art to shape the game’s distinctive visual identity across its different timelines.
Level Art Deep Dive — Interview with Nathan Sioui, Level Artist at Panache Digital Games. The environment team is six people who all do modeling, texturing, level art, and occasionally build entire environments independently. The process starts either with level design’s structural pass or with a concept drawing from Yannick that sets the mood. Modeling happens in Blender, texturing in Substance Designer and Painter using Trimsheets to texture multiple objects from a single material. The world was designed to feel equally detailed for Aaron’s cat perspective as for Noa’s — debris and grime were added specifically so the detail holds up at his low height.
Community Q&A — No artbook is currently planned but the team is interested in doing one. Crow and mouse mechanics from earlier builds are no longer in the game — the cat ended up making more sense. Amsterdam’s city core is dense, not sprawling, with every house enterable. An in-game feedback and bug report system will be ready for Early Access. Keyboard and mouse support was already live. Dutch subtitles are already in; Dutch dubbing is not currently planned.
THE MIDNIGHT CHRONICLE — Issue #02 (June 29, 2026)
Steam Next Fest recap and the extended version of the first Gameplay Feature.
Steam Next Fest Results — 1666: Amsterdam ranked in the top 50 most played demos out of 4,931 playable demos across the festival.
Gameplay Feature: A First Look Into the World of the Zaindaris — The extended version of the first gameplay feature, narrated by Co-Founder and Executive Producer Jean-François Boivin, goes deeper into the narrative, lore, and the Zaindaris coven.
Narrative Direction Interview — Philippe Debay, Narrative Director, explained the narrative department has two members who work closely with level design on mission design and writing. The approach differs from Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey in that narrative design must harmonize with game design and level design — game systems, gameplay, and level design situations must all contribute to the narrative.
Team Favourite Moments from the Prologue — Various team members shared their favourite moments: the atmosphere and music (Sound Designer), Aaron searching for ceremony ingredients in the hotel room (Level Designer), taking control of the cat and leaving the hotel room (Technical Design Director), the witch ceremony around the tree (Animation Director), the transition into gameplay at the start (Senior Animator), the painting zoom-out transition (Technical Animation Director), arriving by boat in Amsterdam with a Radiohead song (Producer), and the Zaindaris mantra growing louder as Noa approaches the tree (Social Media Manager).
Bug Report System Coming — Based on experience with Ancestors, the team was surprised by the quality of community bug reports submitted through Discord before an official system existed. An official in-game bug report system will be ready for Early Access.
