1666: Amsterdam Investigation Guide
Gather evidence, identify targets, and prepare for the Esbat without raising Suspicion.
Investigation is the daytime half of the 1666: Amsterdam gameplay loop. During the day, Amsterdam operates under normal social rules — witch hunters patrol the streets, NPCs go about their daily lives, and The Originals walk among them wearing human faces. Your job during this phase is to identify which citizens are actually supernatural predators, gather the evidence you need to confirm your identification, and mark your targets before night falls.
Thorough investigation makes every Esbat dramatically easier. Players who rush the investigation phase enter the night under-prepared, missing targets, under-equipping for the challenge, and with insufficient knowledge of the arena layout. Patient investigation is not slower overall — it is the fastest path through a district.
Witch Sight and Supernatural Residue
Noa’s witch sight is the primary tool for identifying supernatural beings. When activated, it reveals auras — ordinary citizens have a faint background aura, while The Originals emit a distinctive dark signature that stands out clearly. Witch sight is not a perfect scanner — it tells you something supernatural is present, not specifically which NPC is the Original. You still need to confirm through documents and evidence.
Supernatural residue is a separate phenomenon. Evidence of past supernatural events — objects moved by magic, traces of rituals, items that have been in contact with Nux — glows faintly under witch sight. Finding residue in a building is a strong indicator that an Original inhabits or frequents it.
Document and Evidence Gathering
Every Original’s home contains documents. Letters, diaries, account books, and records that document their long lives and the specific abuses of power that justify collecting their power. These documents are the confirmation you need after witch sight highlights a suspect. Read them carefully — they provide both narrative context and gameplay confirmation.
The game does not require you to find every document. Three to four pieces of evidence are usually sufficient to confidently mark a target. Over-investigating a district beyond this point yields diminishing returns — move on to marking and preparing for the Esbat.
Managing Suspicion During Investigation
Using witch sight in public raises Suspicion slowly. Searching buildings aggressively — breaking in rather than picking locks, making noise in quiet streets — raises it faster. Using witchcraft openly in front of witnesses is the fastest path to danger.
The Suspicion Guide covers the meter in full. The practical investigation application is this: use Aaron to scout buildings before committing Noa. If a building is accessible without raising Suspicion, enter quietly. Save open witchcraft for private spaces or situations where you are already unseen.
Marking Targets
Once you have enough evidence to identify an Original, mark them through the investigation menu. Marked targets are tracked through the night and their patrol routes shown on the Esbat map. You can mark multiple targets in a single day phase, which is the most efficient way to handle districts with two or three Originals.
Building a Mental Map
The most underrated investigation skill is building a mental map of the district before the Esbat. As you explore during the day, passively memorize the layout: main streets, alleyways, building entrances, and the approximate position of patrol routes. This information is not explicitly tracked by the game — it is knowledge you build through observation.
Entering the Esbat with a mental map means you are already oriented, already knowing the fastest routes between Coffers and target locations. Players who investigate thoroughly consistently complete Esbats faster than players who rely on the in-game map alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.
Can I investigate during the Esbat?
Investigation mechanics function during the day phase only. During the Esbat, you are in combat mode — all attention goes to hunting marked Originals and collecting Coffers before dawn.
How do I know when I have enough evidence to mark a target?
The game provides a confidence indicator when reviewing your evidence in the investigation menu. Three to four documents plus a witch sight confirmation is generally sufficient. If the confidence indicator is not showing green, investigate further before marking.
Can I investigate without Aaron?
Yes, but Aaron makes it dramatically easier. His ability to enter buildings through cat flaps and scout restricted areas means Noa rarely needs to risk Suspicion to gather evidence. Always use Aaron first.
What happens if I mark the wrong target?
The game checks your evidence before allowing you to mark a target. If your evidence is insufficient, the marking option does not appear. There is no penalty for careful investigation.
