Getting Started in 1666: Amsterdam

A practical first evening: install, learn the loop, and leave the opening district prepared.

Last updated:

This page is the shortest path from a fresh Steam install to a confident first Esbat. It does not replace the deeper system articles. It tells you what to do in order, what to ignore on night one, and which wiki pages to open when a specific system starts to hurt.

Before you launch

1666: Amsterdam requires hardware ray tracing, an SSD, and a machine that can hold a stable frame rate in Unreal Engine 5 night scenes. Confirm the PC requirements and the system requirements review before you treat stutter as a game-design problem. Set a reasonable internal resolution and keep ray-traced lighting; the city is built around reflected canal light, and dropping those features first usually looks worse than lowering extra shadows.

Bindings live on the controls reference. Learn the character-switch input and the witch-sight toggle before you worry about combat macros. You will swap to Aaron constantly during the day; hunting for the key in a menu mid-search is how players miss clues.

Prologue or Early Access first?

The free Prologue is a separate Steam app. It lasts about thirty minutes, introduces Noa’s Commencement, the companion choice, Aaron, and Clio in the modern day. It does not teach finished Esbat combat. Progress does not carry into Early Access. Play it if you want the story doorway; skip it only if you already know the cast and are ready to buy.

Early Access entered Steam and Epic on 25 August 2026 for $29.99 on Steam and Epic, with roughly fifteen hours in the first campaign chapter and about a year of planned district expansions. Treat the current build as a first borough, not the finished city.

Your first hour in the campaign

  1. Finish any remaining tutorial prompts without rushing the camera. The opening wants you to read the street, not sprint.
  2. Switch to Aaron as soon as a gap, drainpipe, or closed door appears. Cat routes are not optional flavour; they are how you enter half the interesting rooms.
  3. Use witch sight in every crowded square. Originals hide behind ordinary faces. The glow is cheaper than rereading every ledger twice.
  4. Do not dump Nux on street scuffles. Save combat magic for the night you actually named someone.
  5. Return to the safehouse before you even think about triggering the Esbat. Suspicion should be low and potions stocked.

The loop you must internalise

Day is investigation. You collect an Original’s appearance, the seal of their pact, and the true name they signed with. Night is the Esbat: you cast Nominem, they unmask, and you fight with whatever you learned that afternoon. Between full moons Noa is far weaker. That pressure is the campaign’s clock. The dedicated pages are day and night and identity quests.

Coffers are the three-choice jewellery upgrades you pick during a district. Death during the Esbat drops that night’s coffer picks. Conservative first attempts beat greedy builds you do not understand. Read Coffers after you survive one hunt, not before you can mark a target.

What not to chase on night one

Do not start a 100% collectible sweep. Do not theorycraft a perfect witchcraft tree. Do not ignore witch hunters because a courtyard looks empty. Follow the Esbat checklist once, then play. Completionists can open collectibles after the first district story beat.

Where to go next

If the dual protagonists still feel muddy, read How to Play and How to use Aaron. If daylight magic keeps getting you spotted, open Suspicion. If the moon fight feels unfair, you probably skipped evidence — go back to hunting Originals rather than stacking more damage coffers.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.

Does Prologue progress carry into Early Access?

No. The Prologue is a standalone demo. Your companion choice and collectibles there do not import. Early Access starts its own save.

What should I upgrade or unlock first?

Nothing exotic. Learn witch sight, character swap, and the safehouse loop. Spend your first Coffers on survival and investigation tools, not on a damage spike you cannot fuel with Nux.

I died on my first Esbat. Did I brick the save?

No. The night resets and that Esbat’s Coffer picks are lost. Daytime identification and story flags remain. Restock at the safehouse and try again with a shorter route.

Is hardware ray tracing really required?

Yes. There is no raster-only fallback. If the game will not run, the problem is the GPU feature set, not a missing low preset. Check the system requirements page before buying on a borderline card.
