1666: Amsterdam Choosing a Bateratze at the Sacred Tree
The first real decision after Commencement: which cat becomes Aaron’s vessel for the rest of the hunt.
Early in 1666: Amsterdam you visit the Sacred Tree and pick a Bateratze — the feline familiar who will carry Aaron’s 1999 consciousness. GamesRadar’s hands-on described the beat as Noa choosing her Union Cat; the free Prologue and the paid first chapter both treat the tree as a character-defining fork, not a cosmetic shop. This page is the companion-choice article. Movement tech still lives on How to use Aaron. Story context for 1999 and Clio sits on three timelines.
What you are actually choosing
You are not picking a second witch. You are picking the body Aaron will inhabit when you switch. Noa remains the Collector: dialogue, witchcraft, Nominem, Esbat combat. Aaron remains the cat: gaps, ledges, latches, scouting, and — in later systems — possession and coercion of NPCs. The Bateratze choice colours how that cat feels in flavour and, according to launch-week beginner write-ups, how the vessel leans toward secrets, combat honour, alchemy, or play.
Community guides published after 25 August 2026 listed nine Sacred Tree options by archetype name. Treat the list as Early Access labels, not a datamined stat sheet. Panache has not posted an official table of hidden percentages. If a later patch renames or rebalances vessels, this page will say so. Until then, pick the fantasy you can live with for fifteen hours of chapter one — you should not expect a New Game+ swap mid-district without evidence in the live build.
The nine archetypes (as reported)
- The Spirit — secrets, lore, the occult surface of Amsterdam.
- The Hermit — quiet investigation, truth, patience with ledgers.
- The Dreamer — unpredictable, creative approaches to the same locked room.
- The Knight — honour and a combat-adjacent temperament when the night comes.
- The Page — a learner who is written as growing across the journey.
- The Child — play, curiosity, hidden corners and vertical mischief.
- The Alchemist — elements, transformation, a lean toward reagents and craft.
- The Guardian — defence, support, staying close when witch hunters close in.
- The Wildling — outdoor routes, nature, the canal edges Aaron was born to abuse.
Use this as a role list. Do not invent DPS numbers. If two names seem to overlap, that is the point of a flavour fork: the tree is asking what kind of Union you want to perform, not which hidden gun you unlocked.
How the choice sits in the loop
Daytime: send the cat first. Broken basement windows, gaps under doors, ivy, boats, rooftops. Noa opens a window; Aaron unlatches from inside. Focus/witch-sight dots that mark climb points are easy to miss — Game8’s review of cat jumps is about prompts, not about which Bateratze you picked. If a jump refuses to appear, that is a polish bug, not a “you chose the Child” fail.
Night: the Esbat is still Noa’s fight. Aaron can scratch or mark in ways beginner guides describe as helping reveal an Amalgam form once identity work is done — confirm against identity quests rather than treating a blog as a spell list. Death still resets the night and dumps that Esbat’s Coffers. The cat does not get you a free retry.
Practical advice
If you loved Stray-like traversal in previews, lean Child, Wildling, or Dreamer. If you play the safehouse as an alchemy bench, Alchemist is the on-the-nose pick — then read potions. If you want the cat to feel like a scout for Nominem homework, Hermit or Spirit. Knight and Guardian are for players who think in patrols and protection, not in drainpipes.
The Prologue’s tree choice does not import into Early Access. You will choose again. That is not a bug; it is two apps. See Getting Started.
When you are lost in a house, the answer is still “switch,” not a different Bateratze. The tree is flavour and a long partnership. The skill is the switch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.
Can I change Bateratze later?
Treat the Sacred Tree as a one-time fork for that save unless the live build shows a later re-choice. This wiki has not seen an official respec. The Prologue choice does not carry into Early Access.
Does the cat type change combat stats?
Panache has not published a public stat table. Launch-week guides describe flavour and lean, not hidden DPS. Esbat damage is still Noa, Coffers, and Nux.
Is Aaron always the same person?
Yes. Aaron is the 1999 professor. The Bateratze is the vessel. You are choosing a body and a temperament overlay, not a second human companion.
Which Bateratze is best?
The one whose fantasy you will still enjoy on hour twelve. There is no verified S-tier. If cat jumps feel bad, that is a control issue — see controls and performance — not a wrong Spirit.
