Soundtrack and Audio Devlog

Midnight Chronicle Issue #06 is the first post-ship diary. Panache used it to close the Behind the Shadows Devlog series with episode #3: sound and music, and to sell the 1666: Amsterdam Original Soundtrack as its own Steam app (listed around $9.99, with a game-plus-OST bundle during the same intro window as the campaign).

This page is the audio record. Patch crashes live on troubleshooting and Early Access updates. Do not confuse a music drop with a new Amsterdam borough.

What Devlog #3 actually shows

The film is a conversation between composer Jorane, audio director Philippe Charron, and the small Montréal audio team. Jorane came in after a 2021 Le Devoir profile (“In the lair of the witch Jorane”); Charron heard invented-language songs and pitched her as a fit for a witch who cannot live fully in the world she protects. She had scored film, dance, and VR before; a game of this length was new. Work ran about four years.

Three colour palettes sit in the mix: a library register (piano, refined strings) for Clio’s present; 1666 as voice and strings; 1999 as a hybrid, more electronic, less ensemble, still with voice. Éloi Painchaud mixed and mastered with Jorane so Charron could cut stems that loop for unknown player timing. Quartet sessions at Piccolo with engineer Denis Savage layered over home sketches. Period colour in taverns uses hurdy-gurdy, early flute, drum. Violinist Vanessa Marcoux both performs and appears as a character whose playing hypnotizes NPCs.

How the score talks to systems

Noa’s civilian foley is heavier, period cloth; witch form goes lighter, almost synthetic, so you hear the mask drop. Lux and Nux were given separate languages after elemental experiments; Nux landed earthy, viscous, insect-and-gore in the ground. Triton analyses geometry so a closed canal house actually occludes street noise — essential in a city where every building opens.

Aaron’s hearing is a design problem: a cat hears more than a human, but the player is human. The team mixed low-to-the-ground detail and “things Noa would miss” so cat sections teach you to listen, not just squeeze through gaps. The first meeting’s Waterglide cue runs Noa’s theme against Aaron’s. Zaindaris circle vocals used twelve Panache women as twelve coven voices.

The studio also recorded Amsterdam itself — bells, carillons, markets, birds — so the 2024 research trip is in the ears, not only in gablestones and grey brick.

Buying versus streaming

Chronicle #06 is explicit: own the album now and every cue is yours. Streaming is promised on a later full moon, with Early Access songs unlocking first and the rest arriving as the campaign grows toward 1.0. If you only stream, you will lag behind buyers until those dates land. Follow Jorane’s public links from the Steam news post if you want the artist outside the game.

The audio team named in the interview: Sophie-Agnès Mongeau (magic, combat, foley), Dan St-Jean (acoustics, reverb, occlusion, animation), Morgan Hamel (cinematics, UI), Kristian Kurk (tools, voice, Triton). Charron’s two words at kickoff were Emotion and Immersion — ugly enough to hurt, beautiful enough to travel in time.

What this means for players

If a tavern violin scene feels like a spell, that is intended. If 1999 bars feel colder and grainier, that is Devlog #2’s three-era art meeting Devlog #3’s electro hybrid. If you care more about crash-free Codex tutorials than cello, stay on Crash Fixes. If you are deciding whether the $30 chapter is enough city, the score will not add a second district — it only makes the one you have heavier.
