1666: Amsterdam Aaron: 1999 in a Cat

A Montreal-coded professor yanked across 333 years — four paws, no broom, and half of every house you will actually enter.

Aaron the Familiar

Aaron is the second protagonist of 1666: Amsterdam and the reason the city is built twice: once at Noa’s eye line, once three centimetres off the cobbles. Steam’s store copy is the short version: summoned from 1999, he now sees Amsterdam through a cat. This page is the character and play article. Button maps sit on controls. Traversal habits sit on how to use Aaron.

Who he is

Studio Feature #2 and Wikipedia line up: Aaron is a university professor who travels to Amsterdam at the end of 1999 to celebrate the turn of the year. An occult ritual in a hotel sends his consciousness into the body of Noa’s black-cat familiar. He is not a silent mascot. He comments. He panics. He is, in Xiao Yi Hernan’s Chronicle #04 words, passionate, educated, and curious — and the actor leaned on a mixed Montreal background because the writing already pointed there. The funny line is allowed. The slapstick-only reading is not; Hernan said the hard part was keeping depth under the jokes.

He is Clio’s father. Her present-day decoding of the Nuxefer is how the player’s attempts get framed as hypotheses in a book that is already written. That is Petri’s “meta loop” from Chronicle #05, not a multiplayer lobby.

The Union is the coven word for Noa and Aaron bound as one. You switch bodies. You do not play a third combat class. Crow and mouse kits from older prototypes are gone; Chronicle #03 said the cat won because it made more sense.

What the cat can do (verified)

Official and encyclopedia summaries agree on the kit: enter small spaces, open doors, climb, and coerce NPCs so Noa can pass a threshold she cannot talk through. He can convert Lux and Nux when you are dry on one resource. He cannot replace Esbat melee. If a preview said cat jumps only work at prompted ledges, believe the preview — Netto’s Game Room and Mixed Steam threads both complain about platforming feel. That is polish, not a secret double-jump tree.

Level artist Nathan Sioui (Chronicle #03) said the environment team dressed streets for a nose at gutter height: debris and grime so the city still reads when you are tiny. If a room looks empty to Noa, send the cat before you leave. That is how gablestones and cellar windows connect.

Autosave is checkpoint-heavy. Reviews noted Aaron actions do not always flush a save. After a nasty jump, hit the safehouse when you can. Crash Fixes patched some post-combat crashes; they did not rewrite feline navigation.

1999 is not a separate game

You will see hotel corridors, a different visual language, and Clio’s century. Devlog #2 (characters hub embeds the art film) is about painting three eras, not unlocking a 1999 open world in chapter one. Treat those scenes as story architecture. The first chapter still spends most of its 15 hours in 1666 streets.

Bateratze is the Sacred Tree cat-choice vocabulary from the Prologue — archetypes players reported, not an official stat PDF. See Bateratze. Your Early Access familiar is Aaron’s consciousness in the cat you bound, not a Pokémon list.

Play the cat until gaps feel obvious. Then Noa’s day job gets shorter. That is the whole trick.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about 1666: Amsterdam.

Can Aaron fight Originals?

No. He scouts, opens, climbs, and coerces. Nominem and Esbat combat are Noa’s. Switching mid-brawl is not the design.

Who voices Aaron?

Xiao Yi Hernan. Chronicle #04: passionate, educated, curious — comedy with a real person underneath, Montreal-coded on purpose.

Does Prologue cat choice change Aaron?

The Prologue lets you pick a companion at the Sacred Tree. That demo save does not import. Early Access uses the Union as shipped; see Bateratze for what players reported about the tree, not a hidden stat table.

Why does the cat jump feel bad?

Launch coverage called prompted ledge jumps clunky. Crash Fixes did not advertise a traversal rewrite. Report specifics on Discord; do not wait for this wiki to invent a patch number.
